Glenrothes Road Running Festival

Living the Difference the Healthy Way . . .

The 27th Glenrothes Road Running Festival, which took place at Fife Sports Institute on Sunday 28 June last year, had its highest turnout of competitors and spectators for a number of years, with toddlers to pensioners taking part in the various races.

Participating on the day were 350 10k runners, 850 4k fun runners, 150 junior jog runners and 60 bi-athletes. Lewis Millar of Central AC was the winner of the 10k race in a very fast time of 32.34, with Chris Russell, winner from the previous two years, coming in as the runner-up. First home for the ladies was Maureen Hill of Glenrothes.

Senior biathlon winners were Roger Clark of Dunfermline and Patricia Milne from Kinross.  In the Junior Biathlon the 10 - 12 year-old winners were Jamie Fergusson, Kirkcaldy, and Brooke Gillies, Glenrothes.  Scott Bence, Glenrothes, and Kerry Gibson, Fife AC, were the winners of the 13 - 15 year olds junior biathlon.

The field for the 4K run saw many youngsters representing either their school or club. The organisers were particularly delighted to see many new schools taking part. Three schools: St Paul’s, Rimbleton and Kinglassie along with one club, Glenrothes Strollers, have the added bonus of being identified as the recipients of a donation from the Road Running Festival organisers.

As in previous years, one school was singled out for its efforts in promoting running through initiatives in the school such as establishing a running club. The 2009 Police Trophy was presented to Pitteuchar East Primary School, together with a donation to school funds, when they returned from the summer.

This whole event could not function without a myriad of volunteers and our thanks go to everyone who was involved in the lead up to the event, in the preparation on the Saturday, and on race day itself. Thanks also to the main sponsors Fife Sports and Leisure Trust and Lomond Homes. Besides the main sponsors thanks must go to Fife Police, Fife Council, Scottish Water, Eurest, Star Struck, McGilvray Printers who help in many ways to maintain what is one of the largest sporting moments in the Fife calendar.

We now look forward to the 2010 Road Running Festival and preperations are already ongoing as the town of Glenrothes looks forward to another day, sponsered by Lomond Homes, on Sunday  27th June 2010.
