Designing Out Crime

We recognise the importance of promoting good design and layout in new developments and ensuring integration with their surroundings. Attractive and well-designed environments can encourage a sense of pride and ownership amongst residents and create community wellbeing. Good design and layout can also make crime more difficult to commit, increase the likelihood of detection of criminal activity and improve public perceptions of safety.

"The principles of ’Secured by Design’, when implemented at the design stage, are a very cost effective way of ensuring security is maintained in a development, providing public reassurance and minimising the risk of crime. Secured by Design can be applied to any aspect of building development, from housing to hotels and hospitals to commercial developments – in fact any area within the built environment".
Stuart Ward, Fife Police Force Architectural Liaison Officer

At the Lomond Group, care is taken at the early stages in environmental and building design to create areas that are welcoming, pleasant and feel safe. To ensure our housing developments meet the highest standard of design and layout, we work closely with Fife Constabulary (www.fife.police.uk) and local communities to create safe and pleasant environments. Director of the Lomond Group, Alan Seath, and development planner, Shelley Thomson, are actively involved in protecting urban design and designing out crime principles as part of the planning system through informative presentations at the Scottish Police College.
